How Tall Should a Bedside Lamp Be on a Nightstand?

How Tall Should a Bedside Lamp Be on a Nightstand?

Short answer: A bedside lamp is the right height when its shade lights the page without shining into your eyes while you sit in bed. Pottery Barn’s lighting guide suggests placing the bottom of the shade just below seated eye level, around 16–18 inches above the top of the mattress as a starting point. Measure that position in your own bed before shopping: mattress, nightstand and seating posture vary.

Measure the shade bottom, not only the lamp height

Sit where you normally read and mark your eye line on the wall. Measure from the top of the mattress to that mark. Next measure the nightstand top relative to the mattress. The height you need from the nightstand to the shade bottom is the target shade-bottom height above the mattress minus the difference between nightstand and mattress heights. For example, if your nightstand is two inches above the mattress and you target a shade bottom 17 inches above it, look for a shade bottom about 15 inches above the nightstand. This is a measurement example, not a fixed rule.

An overall product height cannot tell you where the shade begins. If a product only lists total height, ask for a dimensioned image or test the silhouette at home before assuming it will meet the shade-bottom target. Also check whether the light is for reading or for a softer room layer; a decorative lamp with no directed beam may not light a book the way a reading lamp does.

Give the lamp room to live beside the bed

Measure the nightstand’s usable surface after allowing space for a glass, phone and any objects you reach for at night. A wide lamp that technically fits may crowd the edge or make the switch awkward. Pottery Barn’s lamp-and-table guide recommends judging lamp height from the seated position and checking the table together with the lamp.

For a real size comparison, the Auvielight Solid Bedside Lamp is listed at 15 inches in diameter and 18.9 inches in overall height. The product page describes alabaster and a black-and-white finish, with plug options shown in the selector. A 15-inch diameter is a substantial footprint on a narrow nightstand. The page does not state the shade-bottom height or a measured reading-light output, so use its full dimensions to test space and verify those details separately if reading performance is your main priority.

Check the switch and cord from bed

Before ordering, reach from your usual sleeping position to where a switch would be. Do not assume that every lamp has a switch on the base: it may sit along the cord. Keep the cord clear of the place you step out of bed, and confirm that the selected plug matches your outlet. If the nightstand cannot hold the lamp comfortably, a wall fixture may free the surface; our bedside-sconce placement guide covers that option.
