What Size Chandelier Works Over a 40-Inch-Wide Dining Table?

Short answer: For a dining table 40 inches wide, a chandelier narrower than 34 inches is a practical first shortlist. Visual Comfort recommends a fixture at least six inches narrower than the table and roughly 30–36 inches from the tabletop to the bottom of the light. Treat both figures as starting points: the shade shape, seated sightlines and total installed drop still decide the fit.
Work the width before choosing a style
Subtract six inches from the table width: 40 − 6 = 34 inches. That gives you an initial maximum fixture width, not a requirement to fill all 34 inches. A 23.6-inch chandelier would leave about 8.2 inches from its outer edge to each table edge when centered; a 31.5-inch chandelier would leave about 4.25 inches per side. Both fit the six-inch-total-width test, but they will feel different above the same table. Tape those diameters across the table and view them from the doorway and from a seated position.
The Auvielight Modern Curved Petal Chandelier lists 19.7-, 23.6-, 31.5- and 39.4-inch diameter options. Its metal-and-glass design is listed in green glass and chrome. On a 40-inch-wide table, the 39.4-inch version would almost match the table width, leaving only about 0.3 inch on each side, so it falls outside this starting rule. The 23.6- and 31.5-inch options are more useful scale tests. This is an example of proportional planning, not a blanket recommendation for every room.
Check the bottom height and the actual suspension
Measure from the finished tabletop up 30–36 inches and mark that band on the wall or a temporary vertical guide. The chandelier’s bottom should land in that range for a first visual test. Then measure from that mark to the ceiling: that is the space available for the whole installed assembly, including the fixture body and chain. The Auvielight product page lists body dimensions for each size and chain suspension, but the minimum and maximum assembled drop are not specified there. Ask for the installation drawing before assuming a particular ceiling height will work.
For a long rectangular table, also check its length. A round chandelier centered over the table may suit a compact dining setting, while a very long table may call for a different shape or arrangement. Keep the light centered on the table rather than on the room if the table sits off-center.
Connect the measurement to the rest of the dining light
A chandelier can set the visual center without lighting every plate and corner equally. Note what light the room already has, and test the dining area in the evening.
